And now, for a couple new challengers to the Firestone Firehawk Indy 500's affordable performance summer tire throne

A few months ago I replaced my former Kumho PS91 summer tires with what had been, up to this point, the no-brainer budget summer tire: Firestone Firehawk Indy 500s. Tire Rack has a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! of the Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 and BFGoodrich g-Force Comp 2 against the new General G-MAX RS and Falken Azenis FK510.

To summarize the test results:

The Indy 500 is still king in the dry, but the FK510 and Comp 2 are close. The FK510 has a smoother and quieter ride. The G-MAX RS is even more civilized than the FK510, but doesn’t keep up in the dry with the others quite as much.

In the wet, the G-MAX RS is best, with the FK510 close behind, and both of them are a class above the Indy 500 and Comp 2.

When I bought my Indy 500s, the FK510 showed up on Tire Rack’s search in my size, but there was no concrete information about it and I didn’t roll the dice. Now, in my size, both the FK510 and especially the G-MAX RS are cheaper than the Indy 500.

I’m happy with my Indy 500s but I’ve definitely noticed they’re not a top tier rain tire.

This G-MAX RS feels kinda like the cheap successor to the Continental ExtremeContact DW. General is a Continental subsidiary, and they do the quiet, good-in-wet performance tire nicely.

If anything I might’ve gone for the FK510. It adds the rain performance and comfort while still being almost as good in the dry as the Indy 500. They’re only $14 cheaper for a set of 4 in my size so it’s not a huge deal price-wise, but the extra wet capability could be worth it.

Oh well, whatever, there’s always some new tire. Folks in the market soon, check out the FK510 and G-MAX RS.

Why no Bridgestone RE-S04s? I have them on my summer wheels for my GTI. They have been superb. Quiet on long highway trips. And they are nearly impossible to overload at legal speeds around town.

I was going to buy the Indy 500’s, but the local Firestone dealer sucks. I ended up with the bfg’s and I am  very pleased. With the amount I drive the bfg’s will probably last 5 years.

Those are full price summer tires. The Indy 500 is their cheaper corporate cousin. Bridgestone sells the Indy 500 outside the USA as the RE003, but for whatever reason they decided to make it a Firestone here.

I got mine at Tires Plus which is under the same Bridgestone Retail umbrella as Firestone. It was simpler than doing the Tire Rack shipping to an installer game. Of course, Tires Plus is stupid and didn’t want to use my hubcentric rings, and they also didn’t balance the tires very well. So I had vibration. One of my front wheels had a bend in it that I had a mobile wheel repair guy fix back in Madison, but I found a place here in Maryland that is a full-on wheel repair shop that was able to really fix the wheel, and they also rebalanced all the tires. All good now.

Among these choices it seems like there’s no clear winner, just a few good options that suit different priorities.

Conti just replaced their DW with the new ExtremeContact Sport

Yes I know but the EC Sport sharpened things up considerably from the DW. It’s not the comfort-oriented choice anymore.

I had good results with the previous G-MAX model tires from a few years ago. Running Michellin Sport Comps currently for the GTO but once it’s time for all 4 again, I’d definitely consider the G’s again.
